Brock Lesnar Makes Controversial Return To UFC
Brock Lesnar made his triumphant return inside the octagon to slay the Super Samoan Mark Hunt at the UFC 200. It was Lesnar’s first fight in five and half years which he won via a unanimous decision. With this win Lesnar’s record stands at 6-3 in his mixed martial arts career. The bout itself was notable, carrying on to the third round where Lesnar attempted to grab Hunt’s legs and mat him down to follow it with the Frank Mir treatment from UFC 100. Lesnar vs. Mir is also incidentally is the highest grossing pay-per-view in the promotion’s history.
This clearly resonates as the reason for Dana White, the UFC President to rope in a WWE contracted professional wrestler. Albeit a lackluster MMA career Brock Lesnar’s return became a huge box office draw in the game. White had even gone to the extent of proclaiming that ‘Brock Lesnar would never step foot inside a UFC ring’. And clearly, dough to gross sounds as a more satisfying answer to it.
Doping violations overshadow Lesnar’s return
Brock Lesnar has been an ace player in the NCAA collegiate wrestling, WWE, New Japan as well as UFC. But, his recent win is overshadowed by his double violations of substance abuse policy.
“The UFC organization was notified that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Brock Lesnar of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on June 28, 2016. USADA received the testing results from the June 28, 2016 sample collection from the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) accredited UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory on the evening of July 14, 2016”, reads the UFC official website.
Within a week from the revelations, news emerged that Lesnar had been accused of another violation from a test on the day of the fight. Lesnar had been subjected to multiple tests as per the norms for a fighter returning after a long span of time. However, these tests at the time ruled him out of any doping possibility, thus green signaling him to compete.
Two year ban for Brock Lesnar?
Brock Lesnar has not issued any official statement into the matters. If he is found guilty of his recent abuses, he is likely to be banned from competing for two years. This ban is unlikely to affect his career with WWE, whose wellness policy only applies to full-time contracted sportsperson.
There were high hopes of Lesnar ditching his current employer for another MMA stint with UFC. Hunt is ranked 8th in the overall heavyweight MMA fighters. And Lesnar’s win would have catapulted him close enough for a UFC Heavyweight title bout. But, this recent controversy has put his dreams of any sort of cross-over or fighting career to an abrupt halt.
His emotional post-fight ‘From one white boy to all nationalities’ promo garnered him a great amount of respect from the audiences and peers. As of now, it seems to have been in vain after the controversy forced Lesnar to remain in the hiding. However, his fans expect him to come out clean after his appeal. But the one-off deal of a glorious return will remain a miss-miss opportunity.
